‘Art in Geneva’s Old Town’ invites you to art openings and guided tours on 2nd and 4th of May

Art galllery open house in Geneva

Geneva’s Vieille Ville art galleries and museums welcome visitors twice annually during their communal “art openings”.

The 25th edition of the AVV – Art in Geneva Old Town – art openings and guided tours will take place this coming weekend, starting on Thursday evening, 2 May, from 18h00, when some 13 art galleries will hold a communal vernissage introducing their latest exhibitions to the art loving public, collectors, and art world professionals. They will again open their doors to the public on Saturday, 4 May, from 11h00 to 17h00.

A wonderful opportunity to visit galleries, view artworks, and talk with gallery owners and other art lovers in an easygoing social setting, this is something that I (and maybe even you?) might hesitate to do when on my own.

The AVV brings together fifteen prestigious art and antiquities galleries as well as three renowned cultural institutions: the Barbier-Mueller Museum, the Art and History Museum, and the Baur Foundation.

Created in 2007, it seeks to establish Geneva’s Old Town as a noteworthy destination for art by showcasing the diversity and expertise of its members and their outstanding collections of high quality works.

Two art open house events or “art openings” are organised each year, one in the spring and one in the autumn, when each gallery unveils its most beautiful and unique works in either thematic or monographic exhibitions that build on their areas of excellence.

In this Spring 2019 edition, we’ll have the chance to view works by Cranach, Henri Michaux, Philippe Barde, Michal Rovner, Claude Lorrain, Doris Pache, Sébastien Mettraux, Piranesi, and Jacques Villeglé, as well as the sensual and refined photographs of Jean-Baptiste Huynh.

There will also be a free guided tour of the galleries with commentary in French by art historian Paula Rey on Saturday, 4 May starting at 11h00. The same day at 14h00, visitors will be given a free tour in French of the Fondation Baur’s new exhibition “Asia Chic: The influence of Chinese and Japanese textiles on the fashion of the Roaring Twenties” featuring stunning examples from the Fondation’s collection of kimonos. You must pre-register for both these events.

If you’ve always wanted — but possibly hesitated — to discover the diverse and captivating artworks displayed at art galleries in Geneva’s Old Town, this is your chance to introduce yourself to the experience amid a laid-back and welcoming ambience.

Wow, I’d love to take part in the Asia Chic guided tour on Saturday! If nothing else, I’ll see what is shared on their website.

You should go — and take lots of photos!

Also, Cranach – I wonder if that’s Lucas Cranach, of the huge chain necklaces in 16th c. portraiture Cranachs!

So much nice stuff to see and take part in…

    • I did go, Pam, and took lots of photos…you’ll be seeing them soon. It happens to be Cranach Senior, not of the chain necklaces 🙂 xo
