Hands Clasped: a metal art collaboration between artist-teacher Gavin Worth and students of the International School of Geneva.
A SIX-METER-HIGH steel structure has taken pride of place on the front facade of the International School of Geneva (Ecolint) at the Campus of Nations.
Entitled “Hands Clasped”, this impressive, inspiring sculpture sprang from the imagination of New Mexico artist and Ecolint teacher Gavin Worth.
To create the artwork, Worth worked together with a team of 20 dedicated students from the school. They helped shape the steel components while exploring grinding, cutting, welding and other basic metalwork.
The process gave them the opportunity to learn about the conceptual and hands-on aspects of art making.
The sculpture symbolizes unity: two monumental hands join in a humanist image of connection beyond borders, gender, race, or other distinction.
As with other works by Worth, the structure’s minimalist yet intricate steel lines rise through the air and come alive through light, shadow and interaction with their environment.
Its powerful symbolism works on two levels: celebrating the concept of unity that overcomes all barriers as well as the unity required of teacher and students working together to bring life to a creative project.
The Ecolint Campus of Nations is located at Rte des Morillons 11, 1218 Le Grand-Saconnex.
