Although Summer is officially almost over, there’s no end in sight to hot, sunny days. In fact, Geneva’s been sweltering in a heat wave. With a little luck the ‘sit-outside’ season will continue well into September. So there’s still lots of time to enjoy Geneva’s public spaces that over the past five years have been revamped and revitalized to inject more green into the urban landscape. These green oases now provide a welcome alternative to busy restaurants and their sometimes cramped terraces for eating and drinking and for just whiling away precious minutes out-of-doors. Meanwhile, a large-scale commercial development launched in 2009 has resulted in a neglected passageway in central Geneva being given a new lease on life. The Passage des Lions now offers, even in the chilly winter months, the opportunity to sit outdoors, albeit under the shelter of a beautifully refurbished glass and metal canopy.
More than any other painter, in my opinion, the great Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) captured in his paintings the essence of his sitter’s soul. Yet to some fine art experts he was an even better engraver than painter. A stunning exhibition entitled Rembrandt in Geneva of some 100 of his etchings at the Domaine de Penthes in Pregny-Chambésy until 23 October offers visitors the chance to decide if they agree with the scholars. Whether or not they do, there’s no doubt that inspired genius pored from Rembrandt’s fingertips.
This salad just shouts SUMMER! It’s based on one of the many wonderfully tasty and inventive recipes from Smitten Kitchen. It combines seasonal fruit — in this case, watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew and even a few pieces of pineapple, but as the original recipe suggests, you can substitute other fruit or even seasonal vegetables because they should all work deliciously with the zesty topping.
This refreshing and easy-to-prep recipe comes from Nigella Lawson and was featured in her 2002 publication Nigella Summer. Her original recipe calls for chicken but we found that prawns make for an even better combo with this dressing which is light but has lots of character what with the acidity of the lime, the sweetness of mango, and the zinginess of chilli.
If like me you’ve been slow to fully embrace the Olympics Games after an endlessly negative media build-up however legitimate, then I recommend a visit to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne to help you get your Olympic mojo back before they’re over for another four years. Informative, inspiring and just plain fun, I found myself reliving so many special Olympic moments and personal memories from past Games that I came away appreciating all over again what the fuss is all about.
